We left St Augustine at 7AM so we could make a 7:30 bridge opening. It was just barely light enough to see. We’re really looking forward to the days getting longer soon.
Historic St Augustine. It’s probably touristy, but we want to come back and grab one of these mooring balls one day and explore.
We passed under a half dozen bridges during the day. None of them showing 65 foot clearance on the depth markers that we like to see. We did hear someone on the radio that didn’t make it under one of the bridges, which made us even more worried about the low bridge heights. In the end, everything turned out okay for us.
We also went through three drawbridges (bascule?) but didn’t have to wait for any of them
Overall, we thought the Florida ICW is better maintained than some of the sections in North and South Carolina. The channel markers are in the right place and we never worried about hitting the bottom. Even though we didn’t like the low bridge clearances, all the height boards were in place and in good condition.
We arrived at Halifax Harbour Marina in Daytona Beach at 3PM and are planning to stay for a few days to wait out bad weather. The marina is one of the nicest we’ve been to, but the town of Daytona seems a little rough. If the weather allows, we’ll get out and explore and maybe we’ll find why people like it here so much.
