From Beaufort to Fort Lauderdale was familiar territory for us. The only new section was Fort Lauderdale to Miami.
The first segment was from Beaufort to Hilton Head. The wind was really strong while we were in Beaufort. We were worried that the inlet would be rough since it was rough on our way in six months earlier. Jennifer asked the best looking fisherman she could find about the conditions. He told her that he’d just come through the inlet and everything was fine so we left Beaufort and just made it out before it got dark. We barely turned on the motor the whole trip once we were out of Beaufort. Our plan was to stop to Charleston, but we couldn’t find a marina with an available slip. We sailed past Charleston to Hilton Head where there was plenty of open space.
From Hilton Head, we sailed to St Augustine and then from St Augustine to Miami where we grabbed a mooring ball in Coconut Grove. The wind was directly behind us most of the way. We had a spinnaker on order, but of course it hadn’t arrived yet.
We wanted to cross over to the Bahamas, but we never made it. At first we weren’t sure what was open and what was still closed due to Dorian. By the time we figured that out, Coronavirus was in the news. We had no idea how bad that would be so we decided to play it safe and head up the coast to Charleston instead.
